UNIQUE LOTUS GARDEN AND RIVER ISLAND The highlight of this excursion is a visit to a privately-owned lotus garden, perhaps the only one of its kind in the world. It is a botanical garden devoted solely to the cultivation and care of lotuses and water lilies, both indigenous and foreign occupying an area of almost one hectare, “Pang Ubol” (Lotus House) is the life’s work and passion of the renowned lotus expert, Dr. Sermlap Wasuwat, and his daughter Primlap Chukiatman. Among the 300 varieties of exotic and spectacular blooms are many new species, some still waiting to be named and registered. The garden is a unique and special place for lovers of Mother Nature.
A drive to Pak Kred Pier and a boat trip take visitors to the fascinating small island of Koh Kred on the Chao Phya River. If was formed in 1722 when the base of a loop of the river was cut by a man-made canal which gradually widened, creating this unique island refuge. Navigable only on foot or by two-wheeled vehicles on narrow pathways, it is home to around 1,500 Mon people, a race which dominated central Thailand between the 6th and 10th centuries. The Mon culture and traditions make this location especially interesting. Before setting off to explore the island’s charms, a stop is made at Baan Kanom Thai (House of Thai Desserts) to see how Thai traditional sweets are made, and to taste how delicious they are.
The old-world ambiance of wooden houses and old temples provide a wonderfully welcome contrast to Bangkok. A pleasant stroll through narrow lanes offers glimpses of the lifestyle of the Mon people. The visitors are taken to the main market where local products are on sale, in particular the distinctive, intricately carved, unglazed, red clay pottery – a skill handed down by Mon craftsmen over generations. Each item is individually made. Many pottery workshops dotted all around the island welcome visitors to observe the process of the age-old pottery making. |
